About Yonehara Beach
Yonehara Beach is located in the central northern part of Okinawa’s Ishigaki region. It is a beautiful white sand beach with emerald green waters that contain numerous coral reefs. Within the crystal-clear sea you can see all kinds of tropical fish swimming about, which has earned the beach a reputation as the best spot for snorkeling in Ishigaki.
That said, please be aware that the tide at Yonehara is very powerful and there are certain areas that are prohibited because of the risk of riptides. If you do choose to swim here, check the tide ebb and flow times in advance, and avoid dangerous areas.
Yonehara Beach is a very wide and shallow beach, and during low tide you can walk straight up to the coral reefs. Despite this please do not touch, take, or damage the coral. During high tide you can swim safely without worrying about damaging the coral.
There is a campground set up at the back of the beach. The area is surrounded by trees so you can spend a day here in relative ease because of the abundant shade provided by the trees. There are a number of other facilities available, including a kitchen, dressing room, toilet, and showers. Day camping is 200 yen, and 400 yen for overnight. The area attracts quite a lot of people during summer. The operating period is from April until December.
From the New Ishigaki Airport take Japan National Route 390 (国道390号線) to the north, then you take Prefectural Road 209 (県道209) to Prefectural Road 87 (県道87号), and along 87 you head about 15km in the direction of Yonehara. The total time by car is about 30 minutes. Free parking is available as well.
