Kita Kyushu Travel Guide

Kitakyushu is an area located in the northern part of Fukuoka prefecture.  It includes the cities of Kitakyushu, Nogata, Yukuhashi, Munakata, and Buzen.  Kitakyushu and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi prefecture are connected by the Kanmon Straits and underwater tunnel.

Sightseeing attractions include Moji Retro Port Retro, a reproduction of the port city of Moji which as a trading point with foreign countries, and the Tanga Market, which has served the people of Kitakyushu since the Taisho era (1912-1926).  For those who are interested in history, we also recommend Kokura Castle (Katsuyama Castle) where Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Hall is installed, and Kyushu Railway History Museum, where you can see Meiji Era (1868-1912) railroad models.

It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area.  From major cities, you should fly or take the bullet train.  From Haneda Airport in Tokyo, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to fly to Kitakyushu Airport.
