Shikina-en is located in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture, and is the largest villa that belonged to the Ryukyu royal family which existed for 450 years between 1429 and 1879. It was used for recreation by the royal family as well as for entertaining envoys from foreign countries. This garden was built in the late 18th century but was destroyed in the Second World War, following which it was rebuilt in 1975 over a period of 20 years.
The garden incorporates Chinese and Japanese styles into the Okinawa regional style and features borrowed scenery in the form of the Ryukyu Royal Palace, as well as a flower garden. There is an island in the garden’s pond where an arched bridge leads to a hexagonal Chinese-style gazebo, called a "rokkakudo". Using Japanese gardening techniques, the pond itself has been shaped after the cursive form of the Japanese character for "heart" (心). The garden is a strolling garden where you can enjoy the various views offered by the garden as you leisurely walk about the pond. Shikina-en has been registered as World Cultural Heritage as of 2000, and it is very famous as a tourist spot.
The open hours for the garden from 4/1 to 9/30 are 9:00~18:00 (last admissions at 17:30) and from 10/1 to 3/31 the hours become 9:00 to 17:30 (last admission at 17:00).
If you are visiting by car, from Naha Airport take Japan National Route 332 and enter the Naha Higashi Bypass (Route 329). At the Uema Intersection head towards Prefectural Road 82 and head straight onto Prefectural Road 22 and you will have arrived (total travel time: 20~40min). If you would prefer to use public transit, you can use city bus lines 2, 3, 5, or 14, and you want to get off at the Shikina-en bus stop. From the bus stop it is a 5 minute walk. You can also board a Naha City sightseeing tour bus "Yuyu" from the Naha Bus Terminal, and once again you get off at the aforementioned Shikina-en bus stop. From the Naha Airport you can take the Yui Rail and get off at Shuri Station from which it is a 15 minute taxi ride to Shikina-en.
