Nakatsu / Kunisaki Peninsula Travel Guide

Nakatsu/ Kunisaki Peninsula is an area located in the northern part of Oita prefecture.  It includes the cities of Nakatsu, Usa, Bungotakada, Kunisaki, and Kitsuki.

In this area, there are plenty of places of interest such as Usa-jingu Shrine, the main shrine of all the Hachimangu Shrines in Japan, Yabakei Valley, Hitome Hakkei, with beautiful autumn leaves, and Kitsuki Castle Town, with Edo era (1603-1868) townscapes.

Also, the Kunisaki Peninsula where Oita Airport is located is also known for its many historical sites such as shrines and temples.  You can see places where people have breathed faith deep into the forest such as Kumano-Magai-Butsu, a Buddha carved into an eight meter wall, and Futago-ji Temple, where you will be greeted by powerful Niozo (guardian statues). In recent years art festivals are held, and you can enjoy the collaboration of nature and art. In the neighboring city of Bungotakada, there are a Showa style town where you can see displays of old tools and posters from the era, and the Showa-themed Dagashiyano-yume Museum.

It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area.  From major cities, fly through Oita Airport.  From Haneda Airport in Tokyo, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Oita Airport.
