What is the Yabakei Valley, Hitoime Hakkei?

The Yabakei Valley is a famous scenic spot located in the upper and middle reaches of the Yamaguni River in Nakatsu City, Oita prefecture. The valley is selected as one of the three beauty spots of Japan and one of the new most scenic places of Japan. In 1950, the area surrounding the valley was designated as Yabahitahikosan Quasi-National Park. The Yabakei Valley consists of some areas, including Hon Yabakei, Shin Yabakei (where Hitome Hakkei is located in), Ura Yabakei, Oku Yabakei, Shiiya Yabakei, and Tsutami Yabakei.

The name Hitome Hakkei (eight landscapes at one look) stems from the scenic spot from where you can enjoy eight different landscapes, Kaiborei, Senningaiwa, Shoenzan, Meotoiwa, Gunenzan, Eboshiiwa, Oshikanagaonomine, and Tobinosuyama all at once. You can enjoy a superb view from the Ichimoku Hakkei observation deck situated at the center of facilities including spas, inns and soba-noodle restaurants. Ichimoku Hakkei is renowned as the best place among many scenic spots in Yabakei, attracting visitors with its beautiful seasonal changes throughout the year from fresh green in spring to colored leaves in autumn.
