About Kanoya Air Base Museum
The Kanoya Air Base Museum exhibits a great number of historical records related to the activities of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force at Kanoya Air Base. The museum collects these records and was built for the purpose of public relations and education of Self-Defense Forces personnel.
The second floor is especially worth visiting as they have an exhibit set up about the special attack force set up at towards the end of World War 2, the so-called "kamikaze pilots". By combining belongings of the kamikaze pilots and records of their "Zero Fighter" planes along with the state of affairs of the residents of this area at that time, the museum has created a unique educational exhibit that all but replicates the base in which the kamikaze pilots were actually stationed.
The exhibitions on the first floor are related to the modern-day Self-Defense Force. By taking advantage of the spacious grounds outside the museum they also have real airplanes that were used by the Maritime Self-Defense Force in the past.
The museum’s hours are from 9:00~17:00 and the final admissions are at 14:30.
To get to the museum by public railway, from Kagoshima Airport you can take the airport bus and ride the bus to the Kagoshima Bus Terminal in the city. From there you take a bus headed in the Kokutai (航空隊) direction, get off at the Kokutai-mae (航空隊前) bus stop which is a 5 minute walk away from the museum. If you are visiting by car the nearest interchange is on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway at Soo-Yagoro IC.
