In the center of the Shimabara Peninsula is Mt. Unzen, a popular sightseeing place because of Unzen Onsen. Unzen Onsen has tourist spots like Unzen Jigoku, the Hell of Unzen, where the steam rises up from the ground, Unzen Oyama-no-joho-kan (Unzen Visitor Center), with information about Mount Unzen, and Unzen Vidro Museum.
In 1991, there was a large-scale eruption at Mount Unzen and the pyroclastic flow caused a natural disaster. So that no one will forget this important history, this area has the Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall and the Sabo Miraikan Memorial Museum of Ono Koba Elementary School, which was completely burned by the pyroclastic flow.
It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area. From major cities, you can fly here through Nagasaki Airport then take a bus from Nagasaki Airport to Isahaya Terminal in front of Isahaya Station. From Isahaya bus terminal, the bus to Unzen takes about 80 minutes. If you fly from Tokyo, it takes about 4 hours.
