Takachiho Travel Guide

Takachiho is an area centered on Takachiho-cho in Miyazaki Prefecture. It is known as being the setting for many myths of Shinto, the national religion of Japan.

This area is rich with spots relating to Japanese mythology. For those interested in mythology, we recommend the Ama-no-iwato-jinja Shrine, where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hidden, as well as Takachiho-jinja Shrine and Ama-no-Manai Spring Water. There is a deep valley in Takachiho Valley, which is said to have been made when Mt. Aso erupted. Another very popular spot is Manai Falls which you can see while on a downriver boat trip.

A car is recommended for traveling through the area. When using public transportation, use a bus from the JR Nippo Main line’s Nobeoka Station. The total travel time is about 1 hour 30 minutes. From each major city in Japan you can take an airplane to Miyazaki Airport and from Miyazaki Airport take a bus to Nobeoka Station.
