About Toroki Falls

Toroki Falls is one of the few coastal waterfalls in Japan. A coastal waterfall is one that falls directly into the ocean; including Toroki Falls, there are only coastal waterfalls in all of Japan. The water falling distance is only 6m and it is somewhat small-scale compared to other waterfalls in Yakushima but after a good rainstorm the waterfalls become significantly more powerful, making it a more interesting sight.

The name "Toroki" is said to be a corruption of the Japanese word "todoroki" which means roaring or booming, in this case referring to the roaring echoes of the waterfall.

Take a Yakushima Kotsu bus bound for the Okonotaki direction and get off at the Tainokawa bus stop. From the bus stop it is about a 3 minute walk to the falls. From Yakushima Airport it is about 25 minutes by car.
