About Matsuyama Castle

Matsuyama Castle, also known as Katsuyama Castle and Kinki Castle, is a castle built on Mt. Katsuyama overlooking the central area of Matsuyama City. It was constructed in 1602 by Kato Ashiaki. Due to the numerous gates, fences, steep rock walls and valleys, it is commonly considered an excellent castle from both an offensive and defensive standpoint.

As for its present-day usage, there is a public park around it that is used as a rest area by city residents. From early to mid-February the beautiful plum blossoms draw many visitors, and in early April the park is packed with people who come to see the cherry blossoms in bloom.

The castle tower sits at an elevation of 132m and it cannot be accessed except by walking over a ropeway. The Tounguchi route beside the ropeway is a regular walking route, but there is another route that starts at the back of the Ehime Prefectural Office that will take you to see the "nobori ishigaki", which is a stone wall that was built for the purpose of obstructing potential intruders.

The ropeway operates in 10 minute intervals, and within 6 minutes you can climb up to the Chojagadaira historic ruins.

The nearest station is on the Iyotetsu Dojo West Line at Okaido stop. You can also take the Iyotetsu Railway Bus system line 52 to Nishiichiman bus stop and from that bus stop it is a 3 minute walk to the castle.
