What is Uchiko-za Kabuki Theatre
Uchiko-za Kabuki Theatre was built in 1916 by a wealthy wax and silk merchant of the time. It is a symbolic building of the city and a must-see stop on your visit to the area. The two-storied wooden building has a Irimoya-zukuri (Half-hipped) tiled roof and incorporates a revolving stage, Hanamichi (Runway) and Masuseki (Tatami box seats) and is considered to be an amphitheater-style space where plays are performed. The building was restored in 1985 and still holds various events. On days when there are no performances, visitors are able see the interior and visit backstage. Experience the atmosphere as the popular actors of the times did at this theater.
10 minute walk from the JR Uchiko Station. A bicycle rental is conveniently located at the Tabian across the street from the station. Rental prices are 300 yen per rental less than 2 hours in length.
