About the Traditional Townscape of Yokaichi-Gokoku Areas

The Yokaichi-Gokoku area was an extremely prosperous area for wax production from the Edo era(1603–1868) to the Meiji era (1603–1868). Presently there are almost 120 buildings lined up over a distance of 600m including private residences as well as merchant houses, and the entire area has been selected as an important traditional building conservation district. There are still people living here today and you can enjoy a stroll through the city while appreciating the long history behind the residents here.

From Uchiko Station (内子駅) to the Preservation Center it is a leisurely 30 minute walk, and this is highly recommended if you can spare the time. From in front of Uchiko Station’s "Tabiri-an" you can rent a bicycle for touring the streets of the town. (300 yen for 2 hours, limited of supply of bicycles is available)

Access

From the JR Matsuyama Station (松山駅) on the Yosan Line to Uwajima it is about 25 min by express train and 60 min by a regular train.
