Ginzan Onsen is an area that includes Ginzan Onsen located in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, as well as the Mogami River. It is famous as one of the places appearing in the Japanese TV drama “Oshin.”
Ginzan Onsen is very popular as a sightseeing spot. The numerous buildings in the hot springs town were constructed over a period spanning from the Taisho Period (1912-1926) to the Showa Period (1926-1989). The townscape will make you feel like you’ve slipped back in time, and the nightly light-up events give the town a fantastical atmosphere for you to enjoy. In addition to Ginzan Onsen, you can enjoy outdoor activities at spots such as Mogami-Kyo / Mogami Gorge and the Mogami River boat ride.
For traveling through the area you can use trains and buses. Ginzan Onsen and Mogami River are tourist areas so they are easy to access. To get to the Ginzan Onsen area, the Shinkansen is most convenient. The train station nearest Ginzan Onsen is Oishida Station, which you can reach from Tokyo by taking the Yamagata Shinkansen line, about a 3 hour ride. The nearest airport is Yamagata Airport, which is a 1 hour plane ride away from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Sapporo.
