About Sendai Castle Ruins

Sendai Castle in Miyagi Prefecture was built by the first generation Sendai feudal lord Date Masamune. Initially only the inner citadel was built, but over time the Ninomaru and Sannomaru were also built. Currently the castle is all but gone, and the inner citadel has become the Gokoku Shrine, Ninomaru is the Tohoku University Sendai Campus, and Sannomaru is the Sendai City Museum. On the road leading to the castle keep, there is an Otemon course and a Tatsumimon course. The Otemon course has become a city municipal road, and many roadways pass through it. The Tatsumimon is winding and crooked, and there are many stone walls in the middle of it, which will give you a sense of the rich protection of the castle. Part of the castle sit has become Aoba Castle Park, and a famous statue of Date Masamune on a horse overlooks the city of Sendai. Additionally at the former site of the inner citadel there is the Aoba Materials exhibition hall and shop. In the exhibition hall you can see a CG replica of Sendai Castle as well as documentation about Sendai Castle. The statue of Date Masamune and several of the stone walls are lit up every day from sunset until 23:00 every day, and it is commonly known as a spot you can enjoy during both day and night.
