About Osaki Hachimangu Shrine

The Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. The year in which it was founded is unknown, but its main shrine is one of the only remains of the Azuchi Momoyama Period and is designated as a national treasure. The main shrine is done in the Momoyama architecture style of gongen-tsukuri, with black lacquer and gold leaf designs, as well as richly colored white connecting structures and carvings that create a beautiful and solemn atmosphere. The primary deities in the shrine are Emperor Ojin, Emperor Chuai, and Empress Jingu, and it is said they can grant blessings of warding off evil and disaster, certain victory, and easy childbirth. Additionally, the important zodiac deity Inui who is revered in Sendai is enshrined here, and is said to grant particular favor to those born under the Chinese zodiac Dog and Boar signs. Starting with the Saitan Festival to celebrate the New Year, a number of festivals are held throughout the year. Most famous among these is the Matsu-taki Matsuri held every 1/14. This festival is also called the "Donto Festival", and is celebrated with old charms and traditional New Year's decorations. It is a festival with 300 years of history behind it and is one of the largest New Year celebrations in the country. There is also a "naked shrine visit" where people visit the shrine (mostly) naked in winter to see a sacred flame. Every year, from all over Sendai City thousands of people come to visit the shrine wearing white headbands and white cotton garments wrapped around themselves, with a paper in their mouth, a bell in their right hand and paper lantern in their left. It is a celebration known all over the nation, and a spectacular winter tradition in Sendai.

You can get to the shrine by train, subway, or bus. On the Sendai Subway get off at Kita-Yobancho Station (北四番丁駅) and then from the Futsuka-machi Yonbancho stop take the Sendai City bus. The nearest bus stop is the Osaki-Hachimangu Shrine stop. (大崎八幡宮前). On the JR Senzan Line, get off at Kunimi Station (国見駅) or at Tohokufukushidaimae Station (東北福祉大前), and you can walk 15 minutes from there. By car, take the Tohoku Expressway to Sendai Miyagi IC (仙台宮城IC). There is a free parking lot for 70 cars in front of the northern road to the shrine.
