About Sakunami Onsen

Sakunami Onsen is located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Because it is so close to Sendai City itself, it enjoys numerous visitors throughout the year. It was opened in 1796. The water here is so gentle to the skin that it is sometimes called "Bishojo-zukuri-no-yu" (Water that makes women beautiful), and this onsen features both open air baths and baths surrounded by stones. They also have deep water that you can stand in. This mountainous region is dotted with inns in a variety of areas, and you can also find the "Miyako-no-yu" day trip bathing facility in this area.

Sakunami Onsen is additionally famous for being a producer of wooden dolls called "kokeshi". Nearby you will also find attractions such as the Homei-Shiju-Hachi-taki waterfall and the Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo distillery.


To get to Sakanumi Onsen, take the JR Sengoku Line to Sakanumi Station and there are a variety of buses available to take you to each hot springs. If you are visiting by a public bus, from JR Sendai Station take the municipal bus for a 50-minute ride to the hot springs. If you are visiting by car, take the Tohoku Expressway to Sendai Miyagi IC and from the interchange it is a 25 minute drive.
