About Akiu Onsen
The Akiu Onsen is located in Miyagi Prefecture. Inside the spa town you can enjoy more than 15 long-established hot springs inns that feature natural hot springs. In nearly every inn you can hear the relaxing babbling of the Natori River while you soak your body in the water. The springs are low salinity springs and so they are helpful in healing neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, and fatigue recovery.
Akiu is surrounded by a lush environment of mountains and valleys, especially the Rairaikyo Gorge which runs parallel to the Natori River for a length of about 1km with a promenade you can walk on, and there are also the Hakken-iwa and Nariaisoko valleys where you can enjoy the stunning rocks and green trees of the valley. During the fall the autumn leaves are also striking. There is also the Akiu Grand Falls which are 6m in width and have a stunning drop distance of 55m, counted as one of Japan’s "3 Lords Waterfalls". There is also the Akiu Grand Falls Botanical Garden located nearby where you can see various plants. There is a Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum that showcases the work of both overseas artists as well as Japanese creator Mr. Teruko Tsuji, a rare exhibition of kaleidoscopes and is also said to be the world’s first kaleidoscope museum.
By public transit, get off at JR Sendai Station (仙台駅) and from there take the Miyagi bus bound for Akiu Onsen and get off at Nozokibashi stop. It’s about 40 minutes by bus. By car, take either the Tohoku or Sendai Nanbu roads to Sendai IC (仙台南IC) and get on National Highway 286 from there, and it’s about 16 minutes to the prefectural road "Sendai Temple"
