Tamagawa Onsen Nature Trail

This is a highly acidic famous hot spring in a rocky terrain. Tamagawa Onsen Nature Trail stretches for 1 km. and is a part of Towada Hachimantai National Park. During the 30 minute stroll you can see various volcanic phenomena. Along the trail there is Obuki source, which is the source of Tomagawa Spring. It bursts out 9000L of water every minute, this is the highest gushing ratio in Japan. There is also a radium fossil "Hokutoseki", listed as an Important Natural Monument.

You can take a rock bath if you put a mat on the rocky terrain along the road shoulder. Apart from geothermal effects, it also gives off radiation which is especially good for health. Bath on the rocks is conducted once in every 40 minutes, it is a good combination with bathing in the hot spring.

From JR Tawadako Station take Ugo bus on Hachimantai Line (1hour 30 minutes) and get off at "Tamagawa Onsen" bus stop. Car: From Morioka IC 2 hours via roads 46 or 341.
