About the Tono Furusato Village

The Tono Furusato Village is a facility set up to reproduce the mountain village of Tono, allowing you to experience the lifestyle of a farm village. The grounds occupy an 8.8 hectare area, and there are 7 old houses that have been reconstructed here in the village, ranging from Edo-era(1603–1868)to Meiji era (1868–1912)houses, including the Nanbu Magari-ya house. As you walk around the village and see the small stream flowing, waterwheels, fields and houses burning charcoal, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time to see the lives of the villagers here. The Tono Furusato Village has been used in a variety of period drama pieces and movies. It is recommended that you stroll through the village leisurely while thinking about how it was to live here in the past. Inside the village is a small forest where you can enjoy various flowers regardless of season. The rice fields here are actually used and in autumn you can see the beautiful rice plants swaying in the wind. There is also a restaurant inside the village that offers local cuisine.

A wide variety of rural experiences

There are old men and women given the title "Maburitto (protector)" who live in the village and act as the guardians of the culture and traditions of the village, these people carry out a variety of agricultural work and act as instructors for the various programs. They preserve a very wide variety of traditions, such as folk tales and showing how to make soba noodles and traditional Tono sweets, ceramics, bamboo crafts and small accessories, votive images, straw crafts, and dyes. In the summer you can also experience catching trout. The experience programs cost extra and must be reserved in advance. In addition, traditional events from Tono are also reproduced, including ancient Shinto music and dancing at festivals, called "Kagura".
