In Yonezawabonchi surrounded by mountains, using the abundant water and high quality rice from the mountain and the intense cold of the northern snowy country to allow long-term fermentation at low temperatures, the sake brand Toko brews their fine sake in their Kojima head office. In 1597 the Yonezawa domain's Uesugi clan established this store, and under Edo prohibition laws it was one of the only sake breweries allowed to continue operations.

In 1984 the old brewery was restored so people could experience sake brewery. You can see what the old sake brewery was like through various exhibits and videos. There is a 140-square meter storehouse where various sake brewing tools are on display, and this storehouse is designed to let you feel the atmosphere from the days of the ancient sake brewery.

The Yonezawa domain was in very deep debt but was saved by reformations such as this sake brewery, and you can see various exhibits here, unrelated to sake such as the Uesugi Takayama Library as well as the famous Yonezawa beef's roots.

There are also 10 different kinds of sake available for sampling, and sweet sake is available depending on season.


From JR Yonezawa Station (米沢駅) by taxi it's about 6 minutes. You can take a bus from Yonezawa station as well which is around 10 minutes, get off at the Omachi-1-Chome stop and it's right there. It's a 16-minute walk from JR Minami-Yonezawa station. (南米沢駅). There is parking for 8 large buses and 30 cars. Due to the sake tasting that is available, you probably want to take public transport.
