About Okama Crater

Okama Crater is a crater lake located in Miyagi Prefecture. Its depth is 27.6 m, circumference - 1080 m and diameter is 325 m (retrieved in 1968). Surrounded by Mt. Kattadake of Zao Mountain Chain, Mt. Kumanodake and Mt. Goshikidake which makes it look like a kettle. It is also the reason why it named as Okama (literally means kettle). The emerald green lake is stunning. Also, the color of the lake changes depending on the angle of the light, so it had been described as "Goshiki-ko" as well.

The water temperature down to 10 m water level is about 2 degree or lower but it gets warmer in deeper water level which is very rare. Because of the strong acidity water quantity, it is not a suitable living place for any animals. Frost-covered trees can been seen in Zao Mountain Chain which makes it a popular tourist spot.  In addition, volcanic activity is ongoing here, so please check the eruption warning before you pay a visit.

Saturday, Sunday and public holiday, it takes about 1hour 50 min. By car, 1 hour drive using Tohoku Motorway "Shiroishi IC". 150 parking spaces are available.
